Punjab - Salland 1 (213v4 - 208v9)

[by Bruce] For the 2nd time in 3 days Salland 1 made the trip to Rotterdam, this time to take on Punjab who needed a win to claim the Hoofdklasse title.
A rain delay meant that the start time was put back by 45 minutes. Punjab won the toss and we were sent in to bat under cloudy skies.
Sahir and Geert navigated the 1st 10 overs against some tight home bowling before we lost Geert LBW for 5 and soon after Sahir was bowled by their Zimbabwean quick for 18. This brought Vic and Rex together and they had a partnership of 60 before Vic got out to a rash shot on 40 off 68 balls.
Three more 30 run partnerships followed with Reinder (18) , Gijs van der Molen (5) and Curtis (9) providing good support for Rex who was taking the attack to the bowlers until he was out bowled going for a big heave off their leggie for a magnificent 78 off 77 balls.
Rex’s dismissal left us at 7-184 with 6 overs left and some smart batting from Gijs van Seventer (15) got us to 9-208 off our 50 overs.
As well as several big sixes from Rex and a free hit six from Reinder there were dangers for the fielding team as pink balls were being launched from the tiny ground next door which had the shortest square boundaries ever seen on a cricket ground.
After a lunch which was light on for food there was another short rain delay before we set about defending our total.
Punjab’s openers got off to a flyer putting on 82 in 15 overs before Vic took a skied catch off Curtis who had come on and was slowing down the scoring with some accurate bowling. Another wicket followed when Gijs van Seventer caught their other opener once again off Curtis and at 2-107 we were getting back into the contest.
To Punjab’s credit they batted very patiently from there against some tight Salland bowling taking their score to 188 before Iain took a skied ball off Vic which was immediately followed by a run out after some sharp fielding by Sahir.
At 4-189 we continued to fight but it wasn’t to be as Punjab’s next partnership took them to 213 and to the Hoofdklasse title.
In truth we bowled too short at times and on a small ground and against quality players we were punished for it.
Curtis finished with 2-54 off his 10 whilst Vic was the other wicket taker with 1-47 off 10.
We bowled 15 wides which is an area we need to tighten up on.
A positive was that we once again put together several batting partnerships and showed good discipline with the bat to bat our overs and post a 200+ score.

Two home games next week are a great opportunity to finish the season on a high note.

Great post! You haven’t mentioned the 90 overs of scoring done by king Bruce Haley!
